The Science Behind the Programme

Breakthrough Research

The significant contribution of Positive Intelligence research is the use of factor analysis to identify the key factors that influence both performance and wellbeing.  This research, combining neuroscience, positive psychology, performance science and cognitive behavioural psychology, has uncovered that there are 10 negative response factors (known as Saboteurs) and 5 positive response factors (referred to as Sage Powers).

By identifying these fundamental factors related to performance and wellbeing, personal and professional development becomes much simpler.  By recognising and addressing your Saboteurs and activating your Sage, various positive outcomes can be achieved such as improved stress management, leadership abilities, relationships, performance, persuasion skills, creativity, resilience and overall happiness.

The Positive Intelligence approach focusses on rewiring the brain at its core rather than just addressing the surface level symptoms.

The 10 saboteurs are:

  • The Judge (Master Saboteur)
  • Avoider
  • Controller
  • Hyper-achiever
  • Hyper-rational
  • Hyper-vigilant
  • Pleaser
  • Restless
  • Stickler
  • Victim

The 5 Sage Powers are:

  • Explore
  • Empathize
  • Innovate
  • Navigate
  • Activate

Two different regions of the brain

Recent developments in functional MRI (fMRI) technology, which tracks changes in blood flow to measure neural activity, have provided scientists and psychologists with a ground breaking opportunity to observe the brain's operations in real time.

This advancement enables us to precisely locate the brain regions responsible for generating various thoughts and feelings, as well as to discern the neural functions associated with the activation of Saboteurs and the Sage.

The Survive Region (Your Inner Saboteurs)

Saboteurs are the voices in your head that generate the negative emotions when you handle life's challenges.  They exist in the brainstem, limbic system and parts of the left brain.  They produce much of your stress, anxiety, self-doubt, anger, shame, guilt, frustration and mind chatter.  These negative emotions are only helpful for a second as they alert you to dangers or issues.  However, staying in these emotions hurts your ability to see clearly and choose the most impactful response.

The Thrive Region (Your Inner Sage)

Your Sage lives in an entirely different region of your brain, the middle prefrontal cortex, "empathy circuitry", and parts of the right brain.  It generates positive emotions while handling life's challenges.  These include empathy, compassion, gratitude, curiosity, joy of creativity and calm, clear-headed laser-focussed action.  This region is wired for creativity and big picture awareness of what is important and the best course of action.

Activating this region results in the release of endorphins that counter the negative impacts of stress-induced cortisol.

Neuroplasticity:  The Key to Shifting the Balance of Power

Your brain is made up of neurons.  When a signal travels down a neuron, it results in activation of other neurons based on synapses and connect neurons.  However, there are multiple choices for which direction the signal would travel.  The question is which neuron will be activated.  Every time a neuron activates another neuron, they become more closely wired together, making it more  likely that the signal will go in that direction the next time around.  This constitutes a "neural pathway".

This is how a repeated action becomes an automatic habit.  In Positive Intelligence, we use the powerful 10-second PQ Rep technique as a way of intercepting the old Saboteur responses, so we can pause and choose a new Sage response.  Repetition results in Sage neural pathways (muscles) to counter the old Saboteur muscles.  This is why PQ training results in sustained change, as opposed to results fading over time.

Mental fitness training is about building mental muscles and not just stopping at insights.

The PQ® App
Available on Apple, Android and Desktop

As a PQ Coach who has been trained by founder Shirzad Chamine himself, Krissi is qualified to guide you through the programme which you will access and monitor through your PQ® app in addition to the weekly Pod meeting coaching sessions.  The app tracks your progress, sends you reminders to charge up using PQ® reps and contains the following:

Daily Focus (15 minutes)

Build one small muscle at a time, laying down new neural pathways to form lasting positive habits in your mind on a daily basis.

Weekly Focus (1 hour, broken down  into small chunks of approximately 2 to 10 minutes, allowing flexibility)

Coach Shirzad (founder of PQ®) guides you through experiential exercises that deepen and personalise your understanding of mental fitness tools.

Gym

A variety of different PQ® Reps for you to choose from to further enhance your journey to forming new neural pathways and lasting positive habits.

Weekly Pod Meetings

Increase your success in establishing new and lasting positive habits by engaging in enriching discussions facilitated by Krissi as your PQ Coach.  These small groups, known as 'Pods', provide weekly discussion opportunities and consist of as few as two people (you and Krissi) or groups of approximately 5 people, depending on the package you choose.  All participants in the group Pods will have started the programme at the same time and go on the journey together.  You can also communicate with your Pod members via the app.

Community

The intersocial network of the PQ® App where you can communicate with others on the same journey as you beyond your Pod members.
